Volleyball men

The Yugoslav volleyball team won their first Olympic medal in their second participation at the Games (they ranked sixth on their Moscow debut of 1980) defeating Russia in the bronze medal match, the world’s best volleyball team in men’s competition (including the USSR medals), and in the quarterfinals they eliminated the defending Olympic champion Brazil. Better than the “blues” were only the Dutch and the Italians, and the Yugoslav team played the last matches of the tournament without their captain Dejan Brđović, who had to return to Yugoslavia because of a family situation.
It was the second trophy won by this generation, they had already medalled a European championship bronze in 1995. It was the third European bronze that Yugoslavia have won (first in Belgrade in 1975, second in Paris in 1979).
