International Olympic Committee

The International Olympic Committee is an international non-governmental and non-profit organisation and the creator of the Olympic Movement. The IOC is the supreme authority of the Olympic Movement. It is the sole owner of all rights on the Olympic symbols: the Olympic flag, the Olympic motto, the Olympic anthem and the Olympic Games. Its primary responsibility is the supervision of the organisation of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
The International Olympic Committee is currently composed of 202 National Olympic Committees.

  THE EXECUTIVE BOARD   The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee, established in 1921, consists of the IOC president, four vice-presidents and ten other members.

  MEMBERS   The International Olympic Committee includes amongst its members active and former athletes, presidents of the International Sports Federations (IFs) and National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

The International Olympic Committee currently has 161 members (38 of which competed in the Games) and 20 honorary members coming from the sports world and the Olympic movement and 3 honour members, prominent individuals outside of the sports world who have contributed significantly to the development of the Olympism and Olympic Movement.

Juan Antonio Samaranch (Spain) is Honorary President for life.
     
             
  GOALS   The goal of the International Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination of any kind, and in the spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair-play.
To promote sport and sports competitions in liaison with the national and international sports institutions worldwide.
To cooperate with public and private organizations with the aim of placing sports at the service of mankind.
To help the development of ‘Sport for All’.
To advance the position of women in sport, at all levels and in all structures, with the aim of achieving the equality of men and women.
To oppose all forms of commercial exploitation of sport and athletes.
To fight against doping.
To promote sports ethics and fair-play.
To raise awareness of the environmental issues.
To provide financial and educational support to the developing countries through the IOC institution Olympic Solidarity.
     
             
  PARTNERS  
  • The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)
    President Samaranch created the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in 1983 to deal with the legal problems an athlete could face. Ten years later the Court of Arbitration for Sport became an independent body.
    The purpose of the CAS is to rule out in all sports-related disputes which are submitted to it through ordinary arbitration or appeal against the decisions of sports bodies or organisations.
     
  • The International Committee for Fair Play (CIFP)
    The Olympic Charter promotes the pracitce of sport in a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play as one of the fundamental principles of the Olympic Movement. The spirit of fair play includes observance of the rules, respect for the opponent and fight against violence and unfair behaviour.
    The International Committee for Fair Play (CIFP), established in 1963, promotes the principles of fair play, which are essential to sport. Every year, the CIPF awards International Fair Play Prizes on the basis of nominations of various organisations and the public to athletes for their contribution to the promotion of fair play, be they Olympic champions or beginners.
     
  • The International Paralympic Committee (IPC)
    The International Paralympic Committee is the governing international organisation of top level sports for athletes with a disability. The IPC organises, supervises and co-ordinates the Paralympic Games and other multi-sport competitions on the top level.
    The International Paralympic Committee consists of 160 National Paralympic Committees.
     
  • The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)
    The International Olympic Committee organised a World Conference on Doping in Sport in Lausanne from 2 to 4 February 1999.
    In accordance with the conclusions of the Conference, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was established on 10 November 1999, with a task to promote and co-ordinate the fight against doping in international sport.
     
  • The World Olympians Association (WOA)
    The World Olympians Association is an independent global organisation representing Olympians. Juan Antonio Samaranch initiated the foundation of this organisation, and its foundations were set on the Centennial Olympic Congress of the IOC held in Paris in 1994.
    The World Olympians Association was established in order to involve nearly 100,000 Olympians worldwide into the activities of the Olympic Movement; to promote the Olympic principles and the importance of the education of athletes; to fight against doping, violence and intolerance in sport; to support diversity and equality in sport and sports management, and to exercise the Olympians’ rights and enable their participation in humanitarian programmes.
    The patron of the WOA is Juan Antonio Samaranch (Spain), the honorary president Jacques Rogge (Belgium), and the president Pal Schmitt (Hungary).

      Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF)
The ASOIF was established in 1984, following the initiative of 21 International Sports Federations whose sports were on the programme of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, with the aim of co-ordinating and defending the common interests of its members.
Today, the ASOIF comprises 28 International Sports Federations whose sports are on the programme of the Summer Olympic Games:

      The Association of the IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF)
The Association of the IOC Recognised International Sports Federations is an affiliated IOC member consisting of 10 International Sports Federations (nearly 200,000 million athletes) whose sports are not on the programme of either Summer or Winter Olympic Games.
The main goal of the ARISF is the creation of conditions that would bring about the recognition of its members, the International Sports Federations, by the IOC and the National Olympic Committees and their inclusion in the programme of the Olympic Games:

      The General Association of International Sports Federation (GAISF)
The GAISF has 99 members – International Sports Federations, sports associations and associations of sports competitions of different levels, as well as the associations and organisations whose field of work is sport.
     
             
      The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC)
The Association of National Olympic Committees meets at least once every two years in order to exchange information and experiences with the aim of strengthening its role within the Olympic Movement.
The ANOC recommends to the IOC how to use the funds deriving from the television rights, and, especially, the resources of the Olympic Solidarity.
The ANOC consists of 202 National Olympic Committee organised in five continental associations of the National Olympic Committees:
