| The first Games were held under
the title of “The International Winter Sports Week” and were renamed the
Winter Olympic Games at the 1925 IOC Congress in Prague. The Scandinavian countries were against the organisation of the Games as they were trying to preserve the exclusivity of the “Nordic Games” (held since 1901), so the IOC was forced to introduce the winter sports to the Summer Games programme. Figure skating debuted in London in 1908 and hockey in Antwerp in 1920. The first Winter Olympic champion was Charles Jewtraw (500m speed skating). Canada’s hockey team triumphed in all five games with a goal difference of 110:3. Yugoslavia participated in the Games with four athletes in cross country. Its best-ranking athlete was Švigelj with the 32nd place in the 18km. Candidate cities: there were no other candidate cities, as according to the IOC rule the organiser of the Summer Games (France) was entitled to organise the Winter Games. |
