Official opening of the Games by: President of the Helvetic Confederation Edmund Schulthess.
Olympic flame: the first time in Oslo in 1952.
Olympic oath: Hans Eidenbenz (skiing).
Official oath: the first time in Munich in 1972.

      At the St. Moritz Games, a (demonstration) tournament in the skeleton, an event similar to luge in which the athletes descend headfirst, was held for the first time.
The heroine of the Games was the 15-year old Norwegian Sonja Henie who triumphed in the figure skating, remaining the youngest Olympic winner for 74 years. Later she embarked on a successful movie career.
Norway’s Clas Thunberg added another two gold medals to his three Chamonix golds. Ice hockey was still dominated by the Canadians. They played three matches and scored a goal difference of 38:0.
Yugoslavia participated with six athletes, again only in cross country. Janša ranked highest with the 28th place in the 18km.

Candidate cities: Davos and Engelberg, also in Switzerland; for the fist time the IOC rule according to which the host country of the Summer Games organises the Winter Games was ignored as the Netherlands (Amsterdam) had no conditions for winter sports.
 
The most successful athlete: Norway’s Johan Grøttumbråten (cross country and Nordic combined) with three golds
