Date: 6 – 16 February.
Nations: 28.
Athletes: 668 (80 women, 588 men).
Sports: 4.
Events: 17.
Official opening of the Games by: Chancellor Adolf Hitler. Olympic flame: the first time in Oslo in 1952.
Olympic oath: Wilhelm Bogner (skiing).
Official oath: the first time in Munich in 1972.
Number of medal-winning nations: 11.
National medal total:
1. Norway 15 (7, 5, 3).

For the first time the programme listed the Alpine skiing which led to the first scandal. The IOC barred ski instructors from taking part in the Games as they were professionals; in turn the Austrians and the Swiss boycotted the Alpine events.
Sonja Henie (Norway) won her third consecutive figure skating gold, whilst her fellow countryman Birger Ruud became the first Olympian to defend gold in the ski jump. The biggest
surprise was the victory of Great Britain’s ice hockey team over Canada (2:1). The secret of the triumph could have been traced back to the fact that 12 out of 13 Britons lived and played in Canada.
Yugoslavia was represented by 17 competitors. Franc Smolej was the best-ranked with the 10th place in the 50km, and the ranking was repeated by the 4 x 10km relay. Those rankings were bettered only in 1968.

Candidate cities: Montreal (Canada) and St. Moritz (Switzerland), but the IOC observed the rule that the same nation should organise both Summer and Winter Games.
