The Games were not held in 1940 and 1944 because of the war; due to their war “merits” Germany and Japan were not invited to St. Moritz, the first city to host the Winter Olympics twice. The most successful nations were Sweden, Norway and Switzerland - none of these nations took part in the war.
Two teams of two hockey associations (the AAU and the AHA) came from the USA and triggered a conflict between the IOC and the host.
The IOC recognised the Amateur Athletic Union, while the Swiss allowed the team selected by the American Hockey Association to compete. The epilogue: the tournament was recognised but without the Americans’ ranking who were fourth.
Yugoslavia was represented by 17 athletes (Alpine skiing, cross country, ski jumping) and the best-ranked were the 50km runners: Knific 14th, Smolej 15th and Kordež 16th.

Candidate citied: Lake Placid (USA).
