For the first time the Olympic flame was lit at the Winter Games, but instead of being relayed from Greece it was kindled in the hearth of the house of birth of Sondre Norheim, the pioneer of modern skiing and, especially, ski jumping. The same ritual was repeated in Squaw Valley in 1960 and in Lillehammer in 1994.
Stein Eriksen of Norway became the first Olympic Alpine champion not to hail from an Alpine nation. For the first time the Nordic skiing was open to women.

Yugoslavia had only six competitors in Oslo, and the most successful was Janko Štefe whose 13th place in the downhill was so far the best ranking of Yugoslavia’s Alpine skiers. For the first time, the Yugoslav delegation included female athletes (Nada Birko ranked 14th and Angela Kordež 16th in the 10km).
