1. USSR 16 (7, 3, 6).
   
                   
      For the first time the USSR took part in the Winter Games and won the most medals, including the hockey gold earned in a victory over the untouchable Canadians.
For the first time the Winter Olympics were televised. For the first time one athlete triumphed in all three Alpine events (downhill, slalom and giant slalom). For the last time the figure skating competitions were held outdoors.
For the first time a cross country medal was won by a non-Scandinavian. This feat was achieved by Pavel Kolchin (USSR).
Yugoslavia participated with 16 athletes (Alpine skiing, cross country and ski jumping) and the best-ranking was the women’s 3 x 5km relay (Belaj, Vodenlič, Birko) with the 9th place.
