Kenneth Henry (speed skating).

      After 36 years biathlon returns to the Games, and for the first time there was no bobsleigh competition as the Americans had refused to build a bobsleigh run.
For the first time women competed in the speed skating.
The opening and closing ceremonies were directed by Walt Disney.
Yevgeny Grishin (USSR) defended his 1956 Olympic titles in the 500m and 1500m speed skating.
Finland’s veteran Veikko Hakulinen (cross country) finished his third Games with three medals (1, 1, 1).
Yugoslavia missed the USA Winter Olympics for the second time (the first ones were held in Lake Placid in 1932) due to high costs and slim odds of achieving good rankings.

Candidate cities: Innsbruck, St. Moritz and Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
