Olympic flame:
Joseph Rieder (alpine skiing).
Olympic oath: Paul Aste (bobsleigh).
Official oath: the first time in Munich in 1972.
Number of medal-winning nations: 14.

1. USSR 25 (11, 8, 6).
   
                   
      A lack of snow forced the organisers to make extreme efforts. The Austrian army helped transport 40,000 cubic metres of snow and 20,000 ice blocks (for bobsleigh and luge) to the Olympic tracks.
For the first time East and West Germany participated in the Games with a unified team.
Sisters Christine and Marielle Goitschel (France) recorded double victories in the slalom and the giant slalom.
Klavdiya Boyarskikh (USSR) earned three gold medals in cross country.
Norway’s Sixten Jernberg (cross country) finished his career with nine medals (4, 3, 2).
Yugoslavia participated with 14 athletes in individual events (without a significant success) and, for the first time, in ice hockey (three victories, a tie, three defeats).

Candidate cities: Calgary (Canada) and Lahti/Are (Sweden).
