      For the first time artificial snow machines were used at the Games.
Nikolay Zimyatov (USSR) earned three cross country golds; Ingemar Stenmark (Sweden) triumphed in the slalom and the giant slalom; Hanni Wenzel won two golds and a silver in Alpine skiing for Liechtenstein; Aleksandr Tikhonov won his fourth straight biathlon gold.
Yugoslavia competed in Alpine skiing, ski jumping and, for the first time, figure skating (Dubravčić debuted) and biathlon (Burger), while the best ranking of any Yugoslav Winter Olympians so far was achieved by Bojan Križaj with the 4th place in the slalom. He missed a medal by 2 hundredths of a second.

Candidate cities: Vancouver and Garibaldi withdrew before the final vote.
