Official opening of the Games by: Jeanne Sauvé, Governor General of Canada. Olympic flame: Robyn Perry (a schoolgirl).

      For the first time the Games lasted for 16 days, the first competitions in the super giant slalom and the team events in Nordic combined and ski jumping were held.
For the first time the speed skating races were held indoors.
Alberto Tomba (Italy) won both the slalom and the giant slalom.
Yugoslavia (the last participation of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia in the Winter Olympic Games) was represented by 22 athletes and achieved its greatest success by winning three medals. Silver medals were won by Mateja Svet in the slalom and the men’s ski jumping team (Debelak, Tepeš, Ulaga, Zupan). The bronze was won by Matjaž Debelak in the 90m ski jumping.
Križaj finished his Olympic career by pulling out of the competition having run into a skier during training.
