Olympic flame: the American ice hockey team, gold medal winners in Lake Placid in 1980.
Olympic oath: Jim Shea (skeleton). Official oath: Allen Church (Alpine skiing).
Number of medal-winning nations: 25.

1. Germany 29 (12, 16, 7).
   
                   
      The USA organised their fourth Winter Olympic Games (Lake Placid in 1932 and 1980, Squaw Valley in 1960).
The skeleton returned to the programme and women’s bobsleigh was introduced.
Norway’s Ole Einar Bjoerndalen triumphed in all four biathlon events, Janica Kostelić (Croatia) earned three golds and a silver in Alpine skiing, and Samppa Lajunen (Finland) won all three Nordic combined competitions.
Georg Hackl (Germany) won his fifth straight medal in the same event (luge).
For the first time black athletes won gold medals at the Winter Games: Vonetta Flowers (bobsleigh) and Jarome Iginla (ice hockey). China and Australia also medalled their first Winter Olympic golds.
Yugoslavia competed in bobsleigh and alpine skiing.

Candidate cities: Öestersund, Quebec City and Sion.
